A viral Pachamama claim. Another fight about the Latin Mass. A synod proposal about who should form priests. None of these are the real problem.

HEADS UP, fans! Membersof my Inner Circle will find an extended segment to this podcast in a player at the end of this post!

Catholic conversation today is often driven by reaction. A headline appears, a claim circulates, a debate ignites — and before long, the focus shifts from living the faith to performing the faith. The danger is subtle but real: when Catholic identity becomes aesthetic, rhetorical, or factional, the interior work of holiness quietly gives way to signaling seriousness.

In this episode of Fire Branded, TJ Haines examines three current flashpoints circulating through Catholic media: claims that Pope Leo (then Fr. Robert Prevost, an Augustinian missionary priest) once participated in a Pachamama ritual while serving in the Amazon, renewed debate surrounding the Traditional Latin Mass following comments by Bishop Athanasius Schneider, and synodal discussion about involving women in the evaluation of seminarians.

I'll write an article later about the claim Pope Leo worshiped an idol. It'll be an honest analysis of the photo and the facts, as you'll only get from "the technician of the Truth". Subscribe to be notified when it drops

Each controversy generates strong reactions. Each provokes lines to be drawn. But none of them reach the heart of the issue.

The deeper problem is spiritual.

Real Catholicism is not determined by aesthetics, vocabulary, or posture. It is not measured by which liturgy one prefers or how convincingly one signals orthodoxy. Holiness is formed interiorly, through cooperation with grace, and only then expressed outwardly in the life of the believer.

External seriousness is not the same thing as sanctity. The Christian life is not about constructing the appearance of fidelity. It is about becoming holy.

Start there. Everything else follows.

In this live episode I interact with the chat across YouTube and other platforms, then explain what I mean by “bad Catholic theology”: it can sound polished and even quote real sources, like a car mechanic using impressive jargon on someone who doesn’t know cars. I note that degrees don’t guarantee good theology, mention having studied theology for 30 years with endorsements from three high-ranking theologians, and point listeners to my episode “Tips for Spotting Bad Theology.”

I give an example: “Outside the Catholic Church there is no salvation, so Jews/Muslims/atheists are going to hell”—the first clause is true but the conclusion is false, since salvation and grace come through Christ, the Mass, and the Church in ways people may not see. I also discuss receiving Communion reverently (kneeling vs standing, tongue vs hand), the early Church receiving standing, and warn against attending the TLM as a rejection of the Novus Ordo.
